Abstract
Purpose: The materials of current frames can be divided into metal and plastic; each material has different advantages and disadvantages. In addition, dry coating has the advantage of improved physical properties and is free from environmental pollution compared to wet coating. In this study, we attempted to fabricate a frame that has the advantage of each material by using metal coating on a plastic frame.

Methods: A metal coating was applied to ultem by RF magnetron sputtering. First, an irregular surface was formed on the frame through plasma etching, and the metal coating was performed for the coloring. Thereafter, a barrier coating was performed using TiO2; it was represented by color coordinates using a colorimeter, and the color change according to the component structure was shown using electron dispersive spectroscopy. The surface roughness was determined by atomic force microscopy and the hardness was measured using a micro vickers hardness tester.

Results: It was confirmed that the irregular surface formation of the plasma etching and the formation of the dense coating layer of the barrier coating were effective in improving hardness.

Conclusions: It is possible to add various colors according to various conditions of sputtering. Due to the effect of plasma etching, it is also possible to reduce the number of process steps by eliminating the need for a pretreatment process. Due to the effect of the barrier coating, TiO2 could also provide adequate physical properties and a protective metal coating effect that prevents foreign matter from entering as well as oxidation. Most importantly, the sputtering hardness can also be improved for each process.
